Lactation Counselors

A handful of our registered nurses at Breath of Life are also Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC). A CLC has received training and competency verification in breastfeeding and lactation support, including latch and feeding assessment, providing corrective interventions and education, and counseling mothers and families.

Under the supervision of our Certified Nurse-Midwives our CLCs can identify lactation barriers, including signs of oral ties, and guidance for further referral and evaluation. We offer lactation visits at the birth center, as well as private lactation home visits outside the birth center based upon CLC availability.

We also offer a free breastfeeding class. This class covers all aspects of breastfeeding, including:

  • Benefits for mom and baby

  • The first weeks and beyond

  • Avoiding difficulties

  • Returning to work

  • Breastfeeding resources

Please register at the front desk; there is no charge to attend the class.

La Leche League Meetings

This meeting, offered on the second Tuesday of every month from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm, is exclusively for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is a peer-to-peer support group facilitated by accredited La Leche League Leader Christine Sciandra. Babies and children are welcome to attend.

These meetings provide time for mother-to-mother sharing in a friendly and accepting atmosphere where mothers share their own experiences, give suggestions, and offer breastfeeding support and encouragement. There is no charge to attend the meeting and pre-registration is not required.  See the meeting schedule on our calendar.
